Favorite House Plant

My favorite house plant is one I knew nothing about. We have had the usual Poinsetta Euphoribia pulcherrima although I have to admit although keeping this plant alive for a few years now I have not taken the time to force it to produce its striking Christmas red leaves, perhaps this is the year to give it a go? Also cyclamen, Afrian violet Saintpaulia and ornamental Fig Ficus benjamina now this is one foliage tree I really want to take a cutting from, my mum and dad have two and I love them.

My current list of plants which are all from cuttings from friends plants and from Mum and Dads stock include, a mint smelling Pelargonium not sure of its species but all I know is when I brush past it’s soft and fluffy leaves it smells like mint. Its a large baby so hasn’t flowered yet, I have high hopes for it flowering this year. Mum and Dads mother plant a cutting I originally took at college has such sweet little delicate flowers, white with a hint of pink. Lets hope mine flowers this year.

A rescued Aloe Vera which is in a glass bowl and looks rather cool. Shame i’ve done the cardinal sin and watered it a bit too much, but its recovering and it has a little sign on it “NOBODY AS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH WATER THIS PLANT!!!” and no one has watered it yet so all good. Fingers crossed it makes it.

A very scary prickly cacti which i don’t know its name and i am terrified of. We did some cuttings last year and they have done very well. But they are still very prickly.

I took a cutting from a friends plant  that she had on her kitchen window sill, Tradescantia ????? I truly don’t know what species it is. Could be T. zebrina or T. fluminensis ‘Variegata’ It is trailing beautifully down from a floating shelf. This plant needs no care at all so perfect for first time gardeners.

To my favorite plant as you can guess by the first image is Ceropegia linearis subsp ‘Woodii’ Otherwise known as Hearts on a String. Its beautiful delicate succulent leaves are heart shaped and form on long trailing stems which can grow up to 1 meter. Mine is longer and still growing. I first saw these in Laetitia Maklouf’s book “The Virgin Gardener” under the title Ceropegia on a Sconce. Check out her book on Amazon. I’m not a virgin gardener, but i do love her ideas and this book. Ceropegia needs good bright light in free draining soil, water well but do not over water especially in winter. Prune off dead stems and cut back to the length you want, it can and will get out of hand, I know! But I do love this plant and it’s name.
